About Sindri

Sindri is small but important industrial town located within the limits of Dhanbad city - the district head quarter of Dhanbad District. Being an important industrial town of Jharkhand, it is home to many industrial units, including few large scale industries. Besides, this small town is also home to one of the premier engineering unit of Jharkhand state. History of Sindri

There is not much into history of this small town, except for how this small town came to be known by its present name ‘Sindri’. Historical records suggest that word ‘Sindri’ is derived from word ‘Sindoori’, which literally means Vermilion that traditional Indian women wear on their forehead. But historical records suggest that word ‘Sindoori’ came into being because of vermilion colored soil that is commonly found here. To be more specific, the soil found here is Laterite soil with light reddish hue color, which local tribe took it as vermilion and hence named this place as ‘Sindri’.

Economy of Sindri

In introductory paragraph we did tell you about Sindri town being a very important industrial town of Jharkhand state. Although owing to closure of Fertilizer Corporation of India in 2002, Sindri town has certainly lost some of its yesteryear glory. Fertilizer Corporation of India or FCI was one of the biggest fertilizer companies of India and its closure certainly created lot of economic upheaval for this town. However, this small town is still home to many medium and few large scale industrial units, which have generated huge number of employment for locals. The existing large scale units are ACC LTD and large coal mines of Indian Iron and Steel Company, which now has been taken over by Steel Authority of India LTD (SAIL) and Projects and Development India Limited ((PDIL).


As mentioned before locals of Sindri are employed in huge number in these units, but huge number of Sindri locals are also employed in factories and units located in other parts of Dhanbad District. Dhanbad region, as we all know, is considered as coal capital of India. There are huge number of coal mines and factories throughout the district, where thousands of locals from various town and villages are employed.

Transportation in Sindri

Today Sindri town is pretty self sufficient on the front of local transportation. Be it local transportation or be it connectivity. Talking first about its local transportation, then that is taken care by standard auto rickshaws, which today are plying in pretty decent numbers on Sindri’s road. There are big auto rickshaw stands outside all the railway stations located in and around Sindri town.
Now talking about connectivity, then Sindri is pretty well connected with rest of India via railway service. There are as many as four railway stations within 6 kms. Sindri Marshalling Yard, Pathardih Junction, Sindri Block Hut and Bhojudih Junction. However, Sindri Town Station – located in the very heart Sindri Town – is the main railway station. With so many stations in and around Sindri town, its connectivity with all the prominent cities of home state Jharkhand and even few important cities located outside of it is pretty obvious. To be more specific, Dhanbad, Gomoh, Ranchi, Howarh and Patna are some of the prominent town that Sindri town is directly connected to via train.

As of today just one or two petrol pumps operate in Sindri town. This again though is far from desirable scenario, but Sindri town does not face any petrol and diesel shortage as such. This is mainly owing to its proximity with Dhanbad city, where there are ample numbers of petrol pumps.

Today Sindri town boosts pretty robust mobile and internet services. This is again largely thanks to its proximity with well developed city like Dhanbad.
